FINER FARMACY — PLANT PROFILE: NUT GRASS
Cyperus rotundus — Sedge family

In the Yard

Nut grass is the plant your neighbors spend fortunes trying to kill. A perennial sedge — “sedges have edges,” so roll the stem and feel the triangle — it spreads through an underground network of rhizomes and small dark tubers that survive almost anything. It is called the world’s worst weed. It is also one of the most valued medicinal plants on Earth.

Traditional Use

In Ayurvedic medicine, where it is known as Musta or Mustaka, nut grass has been prescribed for over 2,000 years — it appears in the Charaka Samhita — as a digestive herb, a woman’s herb, and a general tonic. Traditional healers across Africa and Asia reach for the tuber. The medicine of this plant is underground: the tubers, not the leaves.
AS FOOD
The tubers are edible, though bitter raw. Roasting transforms them — ancient Egypt and the Mediterranean roasted them whole, or dried and ground them into flour. People have eaten nut grass since the Mesolithic period. In the yard tea, a few roasted, shaved tubers add an earthy, bitter note that carries the blend.

Harvest

August through November, when the tubers are fattest. Dig gently where the plants are thickest, follow the rhizome threads, and take only what the patch can spare. Dry them whole in a warm, airy place.

Urban Homesteader’S Note

You will never eradicate nut grass — so stop fighting and start harvesting. Every tuber you dig is one the lawn mower cannot reach, and the patch keeps producing. The weed and the medicine are the same plant; it is only a question of which side of the shovel you stand on.
